Musician Spotlight: Nicholas Slaggert
Nicholas plays Principal Trumpet in the Great Falls Symphony and is a member of our Orchestra Council.
Nicholas grew up in Evanston, Illinois just north of Chicago. He started playing trumpet when he was 11 years old and was hooked! He started taking a serious interest in music in high school and played in his school band and school orchestra. He also played for two additional youth orchestras outside of school!
He said he had never thought of pursuing music as a career until he was introduced to the idea by several of his older band and orchestra classmates. He said after that he was clear on what he wanted to do and never looked back.
He began his college studies at De Paul University in Chicago but transferred to Montana State to finish his degree, following his dreams of living in the West! He said he'd always wanted to live near mountains and it all just worked out to come to MSU. Living in Bozeman, Nicholas auditioned for and got a position in the Helena Symphony and realized he could have a career in music and not have to live in a city the size of Chicago. He became the librarian for the Helena Symphony during Covid and has been playing with them for around 5 years. He started playing with the Great Falls Symphony in the 22-23 season.
Outside of music, Nicholas says he is a 'total ski bum.' In Bozeman he enjoyed skiing at Bridger Bowl, and was a ski instructor in the adaptive ski program at Big Sky for a time. He now frequents Great Divide and occasionally Discovery.
He grew up playing hockey, and sometimes plays pickup games when in Great Falls. When he isn't outdoors, he is a Star Trek Fan (Picard not Kirk), and enjoys sci-fi books and craft beers. He is also a history buff and loves to research niche historical events and eras!
Watch Nicholas and our other Musician Spotlights perform at our concerts this season! Our next concert is Christmas on December 8th at 3 pm. Get your Christmas tickets today at gfsymphony.org/christmas
